Event 1 Ivana Dama

 Event 1 Blog 4/17/2024

This was an exciting event. It was about sound. Sound is an auditory sensation produced by the vibrations Professor Vesna discussed during the lecture and at the event's beginning. These vibrations travel through air and water and can be perceived by my ears. Sounds are vibrations and even vibrations we do not hear. These vibrations are below the audible range of my hearing but still exist. This was more about what we do not hear but feel and sense, like molecular and cellular vibrations. I learned that molecular and cellular vibrations play an essential role in the production and perception of sound. Molecular vibrations create pressure and movement in air or water, which can help us detect sound. Human voices and animal voices how we affect each other and how we work with air.

Guest Speaker Ivana Dama
Ivana is a UCLA graduate of the School of Arts and Architecture in the Design Arts and Digital Humanities department. She enjoys working with sound and space. Sound artist and sculptor work, she focuses on a variety of mediums. She is doing research and will graduate from Yale University with a degree in sculpture. She convinced Yale that she should be considered for the Sculpture program by convincing the panel that sound should be viewed as a structure. "After all, it takes up physical space," she states. She did a cool exercise on emotions. She explored control in the relationship with your body. She experimented with how someone could read one person's feelings by a computer and activate them in someone else's body. She presented multiple projects in exploring space and sound. Another was on tracking. She used custom pupil tracking software to map the darkest point in a person's eyes. She related this to reading or focusing on something too long that causes eye exhaustion. She called this experience Command and Control. She explored playing a musical instrument with your eyes using the pupil-tracking software. This software uses the eyes to move the motor, playing sounds.

She also spoke about her experimental project in audible silence, which connects to the earlier note from Professor Vesna. When the pump stopped, the sound went away, but then silence appeared. Silence is a sound because you can hear and feel and sense that you hear nothing if that makes sense. When the pump reengages, you can now hear the pump, which is different from not hearing the pump. Silence is a sound that makes sense at this very moment.

What I learned about this event is experiencing sound in more than one way is very interesting. The moments where sound does not exist is the very moment that sound is in fact existing below what is audible.  I learned that there are things we do not hear but we can feel. I also learned that Space is silent. I would definitely recommend this event. It was full of curiosity, problem solving, wonder and entertainment.
