Robotics and Art-Week 3
Week 3
This week, I learned that robots and art are connected through robotic art, which explores the intersection of technology and creative expression. Robotic art uses robot tools to explore new forms of expression, like that of Dirk the Homeless Robot. This project challenged the traditional norms of art and pushed boundaries, adding real things like human movements, interactions, and automation.

Walter Benjamin began speaking about mass production systems long ago. He acknowledges that art has changed over time and has been influenced by changing techniques and society's demands. What's interesting is that he wrote this in 1935 during the age of mechanical production. He could already foresee that art would continue to change because technology was advancing. I wonder what he would think now with the advancements in technology and science and how these advancements have influenced art.
Arduino boards a motherboard that allows users to write and upload code to the Arduino board, allowing them to control and interact with electronics. Take a design from a simple shape and design for how you react to it. The Arduino powers interactions with items kids can use, like helicopters and toys. It is a versatile platform that empowers individuals to bring their electronic ideas to life. As Massimo stated, it's great for simple or complex robotics projects. My favorite part is that beginners and experienced electronics fans can use it. Below is an Arduino board connected to wifi; it reads the plant's well-being. This is awesome.

The movie Wall-E is an example of robotics and art. He is a small trash compacting robot with expressive
movements, gestures, and emotions conveyed through a robotic design similar to Dirk the Homeless Robot.
This movie demonstrates how robotics and art can evoke deep emotional responses and
convey powerful messages. This was a really good movie.
As I reflect on Walter Benjamin, he would really appreciate the innovative ways artists use robotics to create interactive experiences like Arduino. However, he might wonder if the use of robots lessens the role of the human artist because he was critical of mass production. Robots make art more interesting and allow artists to be more creative. "This practice brings the embodied experientiality, so central to art, hard up against the tacit commitment to abstract disembodiment inherent in the computational technologies.” (Simon Penny, “Robots and Art,” D. Herath et al. (eds.), Springer, 2016)

Robots & Art – Exploring an Unlikely Symbiosis (roboticart.org)
Hey Dylan! It's amazing how you've analyzed the relationship between robotics and art, especially as it relates to robotic artwork like Dirk the Homeless Robot. It's cool to see how Walter Benjamin's 1935 observations on how art changed in response to technology developments still hold true today, particularly in light of new products like Arduino boards that push creativity in both beginners and experienced enthusiasts.
ReplyDeleteHi Dylan! Thank you for your insightful response. I really liked your Wall-E example as this is such a childhood memory and how you correlated that to the relationship between robotics and emotional expression! I definitely think the creator/producer of Wall-E have never imagined how powerful "robots" and "Artificial Intelligence" have grown since the release of the movie. Indeed, us humans are using AI to assist us on our everyday task, including art creation.
ReplyDeleteHey Dylan! This was a very good blog post. Loved the way you were able to go in depth about Walter, and explain the correlation between art and robotics with the sample video you provided also. One example of emotion in Wall-E is when every time he feels some type of way, he expresses himself with different robotic noises. This as a audience makes us feel a certain type of way for him which shows how robotics and art can connect with emotion.
