Week 8 | Nanotechnology + Art | Blog Assignment

 Week 8 | Nanotechnology + Art | Blog Assignment

This week we learned about an area that Professor Vesna has worked with for the past year. Nanotechnology deals with the study of very small things. It is the creation of functional devices and systems. It is also the engineering of these systems at a molecular scale. That is small!!!!  Nano means one-billionth. A piece of human hair is approximately 100,000 nanometers wide. These art/scientists are working with the smallest entities known to mankind. “Nanotechnology is about looking at the world on such a tiny scale that we can not only see the atoms that make up everything around us.” (Marr, 2020) This is Introducing a whole area into our lives. Older methodologies do not work in Nano science; it is a collaborative science and art approach.

One thing I found particularly interesting was the comment in this video below “a sensitivity to small changes-single mutations- that result in “meaningful” large changes. Wow the example was a small two wing fly mutation can make a 4-wing fly. Sort of creepy. Except for the example when it came to money lol. I would love to flip a 1 and put it in a different place and the amount goes from $1 to $1,000,000. Talk about improving life in a nanosecond! Thai shows the power of molecular programs in nanotechnology.

After going through this module, I learned that nanotechnology holds significant potential for the future of art. This field has enabled the creation of material and techniques with crazy detail and durability. The intersection of art, advanced technology and creativity can revolutionize art and science.
